THE CHALLENGE

We have recently completed a mezzanine floor, office and warehouse fit out project for a company in Derby. Like most growing companies they found them in a position where they had outgrown their existing premises and we’re occupying two separate locations. This meant half the team were based on one side of town and the others based a few miles away. This wasn’t good for collaboration and efficiency so the directors were on the lookout for one industrial unit where they could bring the office staff and operational side of the business under one roof.

When a new development of industrial units came on the market the company started looking at the feasibility of procuring one of the units. The challenge they faced was a common one. How big did the industrial unit need to be to accommodate the company in the short term, but also allow for expansion in the future. They needed a company who could help determine the size of the unit required and complete the space planning of the offices, workshops and warehouse areas.

The unit they located was an empty shell, with bare minimum fit out work inside. They needed a company to help plan the space, provide accurate budgets and manage the project from a build perspective.

THE SOLUTION

After googling companies, they contacted Nexus workspace and engaged in conversations with our sales director David. As the building wasn’t constructed yet a team’s call was held to discuss the requirements and a discussion took place around the architects’ drawings. It was clear from the outset that they not only needed assistance with the space planning and budgeting, but they also wanted to create an environment that was befitting of their company brand. The interior design aspect was important as the company wants to portray an image befitting of their sector, so Nexus teamed up with an interior design house to collaborate on the project and combine the practicable aspects of the build and implementation with the flair of the interior designer.

The company provided Nexus with a list of requirements, detailing which rooms were required, how many staff worked in each department and provided some basic imagery of designs they liked on the internet. A site visit was also conducted to the existing warehouse to review the operational side of the business. A review of how many pallets were required, how the business operated, and a plan was drawn up to incorporate all the requirements into the new design.

Once the layout was agreed, it was over to the interior designer to add elements to the build that would enhance the fit out. A colour scheme was developed, suggestions made for bespoke joinery items and wall graphics and also recommendations to improve the lighting design by adding in some feature lights.

“Our favourite project to date. The interior design aspects have elevated the fit out to another level ”  MATHEW BARNES, NEXUS WORKSPACE

THE RESULTS

The results of the fit out are a fully functional warehouse and office space that looks superb. Nexus undertook the roles of principal designer and principal contractor which allowed the client to concentrate on running their business with minimal distraction. Working with the interior designer has allowed us to enhance the level of fit out that is befitting of the companies’ brand. This is a key area Nexus wish to expand on in the future.

The project included: Mezzanine floor, partitions, suspended ceilings, joinery works, flooring, pluming, electrics, data, AC, Ventilation, Warehouse lighting, Bespoke joinery, wall graphics and much more.

The client is delighted with the fit out and next month a case study video will be created that will showcase the space when fully operational and all furniture is in place.

“What a great project to be involved with. When you walk into reception you really get the wow factor”
