WHAT IS A MEZZANINE FLOOR PALLET GATE?

A mezzanine floor pallet gate is a piece of equipment that is utilised to allow you to safely transfer goods to and from your mezzanine floor. Manufactured from steel, they are an affordable and effective solution when compared with other solutions, such as a goods lifts. Pallet gates can be designed to accommodate various sizes of pallets and there are a number of options available.

Mezzanine pallet gates come complete with a powder coated finish, which offers high durability in any warehouse environment. The only piece of equipment you need to supplement a pallet gate is a forklift truck or stacker that can lift your pallets up to the finished floor level of the mezzanine floor.

WHY ARE PALLET GATES NEEDED ON A MEZZANINE FLOOR?

For health and safety reasons, it is vital that a permanent edge is kept between the warehouse operative and the edge of the mezzanine floor when loading and unloading goods, to ensure personnel don’t accidentally fall off the floor.

Mezzanine pallet safety gates are designed to allow you to load a pallet onto the floor whilst maintaining a barrier to the exposed floor below. Ensuring a safe method of goods transfer is essential for any business and it’s an important part of the building control application too.

Previous solutions (such as a sliding pallet gate) are now banned, however there are still a number of solutions available to you, so you are sure to find the right one to suit your business operations.

TYPES OF MEZZANINE PALLET GATES

UP AND OVER PALLET GATES

This the most popular solution for a mezzanine floor pallet gate. Designed to accommodate standard pallet sizes, the up and over pallet gate is fully mechanical and is very easily operated.

The warehouse operative simply moves the pallet gate into position to accept the pallet and once the pallet is loaded onto the floor, they swing the pallet gate over the pallet to allow them access to the palletised goods. The pallet gate therefore always keeps a permanent barrier between the warehouse operative and the edge of the mezzanine floor.

OVERSIZED UP AND OVER PALLET GATE

Working on the same principle as the up and over pallet gate described above, these pallet gates are designed to accommodate larger pallet sizes (In pallet size or load height). They are still mechanically operated however they take up a larger floor space.

If your pallet is on the higher side, the pallet gates can become quite large, so plenty of head height is required. If your pallet size is on the larger side, these pallet gates can become heavy and more difficult to use than a standard gate too. So please keep that in mind before settling on your chosen gate.

PULLEY STYLE PALLET GATE

These pallet gates are an excellent choice for accommodating larger pallets. Moving away from the traditional ‘up and over’ style, these pallet gates incorporate a pulley system design that allows the operative to simply lift up the barrier on the gate.

This in turn keeps a permanent edge against the edge of the floor to keep them safe at all times. These pallet gates are a lot easier to use than an oversized pallet gate but the offset is they are more expensive to implement.

SWING GATE PALLET GATE

Although traditional swing gates are no longer allowed on a mezzanine floor as they don’t offer a permanent edge. An inset swing gate is a possible solution. The gate is inset into the floor and the swing gate is set back so that the pallet is guarded on the side with a handrail.

These solutions do take up more floor space than a traditional mezzanine floor pallet gate, however they are particularly suited to an environment where head height is restricted.

CONCLUSION

Pallet gates are the most popular solution for the transfer of goods between mezzanine levels within a warehouse environment. They are cost effective and easy to use. Other options for loading materials such as goods lifts or conveyor systems become expensive in comparison and although they have their uses, are not commonly utilised.
